Joaquin Phoenix Slams Dairy Industry in 2020 Oscars "Best Actor" Speech

After winning "Best Actor" for Joker at last night's Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix delivered a shocking speech, criticizing the dairy industry. Phoenix has been vegan since the young age of 3 and has consistently used his platform to advocate for animal rights. Phoenix has contributed to documentaries showing the ethics and health benefits behind a vegan diet, such as by narrating Earthlings and executive producing What the Health. After the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, Phoenix even attended a slaughterhouse vigil run by Los Angeles Animal Save to show pigs kindness and love before they were sent to their death. The actor played an instrumental role in convincing the Golden Globes to create an entirely vegan menu just days before the event. The Oscars nominee luncheon was also plant-based, as well as about 70% of the menu in the evening at the Governors Ball.

“I think we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that’s intended for the calf and we put it in our coffee and cereal. We fear the idea of personal change, because we think we need to sacrifice something; to give something up. But human beings at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop, and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and the environment.” - Joaquin Phoenix, 2020 Oscars "Best Actor"
