How COVID-19 has affected Global Rescues: No Dogs Left Behind

Hello everyone! How are you all doing?

It’s been a while since I’ve written on here, but I’m excited to be back! I saw an Instagram post by one of my favorite organizations, No Dogs Left Behind, which inspired me to write this article. I’ve written about this nonprofit before (see here), but to recap, NDLB is a 501(c)(3) organization which rescues dogs on the front lines of the barbaric China meat trade, which kills an estimated 10-20 million dogs annually. NDLB has sanctuaries in China with over 500 survivors, where dogs receive medical care, nutritional support, and rehabilitation until they are ready to be adopted (and yes, you can adopt the dogs even if you live in the United States!).

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted organizations such as NDLB, as airlines cut flights. These organizations were -- and still are -- in desperate need of help. Jeffrey Beri, founder of No Dogs Left Behind, has just touched American soil for the first time since January 24, 2020. Prior to COVID, Beri had traveled monthly to the U.S., bringing about 50 dogs per trip to rescues such as Southampton Animal Shelter in Long Island, New York.

I was so happy to see that Beri is finally back in the United States and is bringing 88 dogs with him from China, some of whom have already found loving forever homes. An article by The New York Post states, "They saved the dogs by confronting the illegal traffickers in China and threatening to turn them in to face high fines from Chinese authorities if they don’t hand the dogs over for adoption. They had to go as far as using drones to find the meat sellers and the dogs."

Global organizations such as NDLB are still in desperate need of help. You can assist these rescues by donating, posting on social media, volunteering, or adopting a furry friend for some amazing quarantine company! You can also support NDLB by buying merchandise, such as a knit hat, which would make a great gift during the holidays.

I really encourage you all to spread holiday cheer by supporting global rescues, such as NDLB, who is fighting boots on ground to save these helpless animals. As Jeff Beri says, “Together, we fight the fight!”
