China Regulations Take a Turn for the Worse

On May 1, 2021, the Chinese government passed regulations which ban street dogs, dogs off-leash, and dogs without all documentation (such as rabies certificate and dog tags on collar). Any dog found in violation is subject to execution.

Dogs are being ripped out of owners' hands and publicly executed or sent to detention centers. At these centers, the dogs live in filth until they are beaten to death. Many cities in China implement a strict one-dog policy, where each household is allowed only one dog. If this policy is violated, the dog is confiscated and killed by local authorities.

Some counties, such as in the Yunnan province, even have a ban on public dog walking. Anyone found walking their dog 3 times will have their pet taken and killed. Officials claim owners must keep their pets indoors at all times to promote "civilized" dog-raising habits.

Dr. Jaipal Singh Gill, executive director of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Singapore, states that confining dogs indoors permanently can be "detrimental to the animal's welfare." Read more about the policy in this BBC News article.

"This is not about race, religion, or politics. This is about a fight for sustainability and global animal welfare laws." ~ Jeffrey Beri, founder of No Dogs Left Behind
